The environment is on everyone’s plate these days and rightly so.
So when we had the opportunity to build the depot, we decided that in addition to the normal standards of health and safety, it was essential for us to provide a venue with a respectful approach to our energy use and environmental footprint.
At ROD, we use passive solar water exchange for hot water and geothermal heating to keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We will install wind generation to accommodate the necessities of our cold rooms and freezing capacities. We test our ground water and leases frequently and use a grey water storage system. Our main vehicle is a hybrid and we use carbon credits to offset the transportation to market.
The Depot also features a tasting room and information centre. We love taking an ecotourism approach where visitors can go out on the water and experience the Oyster in its ocean bed setting.
The wetlands in front of the Depot are a statement to our commitment to the environment, and we might say you can view yellow-legged curlew and plover as well as a great Oyster. In addition, the wetlands and pristine waters support Bald Eagles, Osprey, Seals, Great Blue Heron and numerous species of waterfowl. It is truly an unspoiled water paradise. The average six-foot tidal exchange twice each day ensures the purity of our lease waters and our crop of tomorrow’s Oysters.
